Irish team lose out to the Netherlands in Elite International

An Irish Elite side were beaten 4-1 by the Netherlands last night in Rotterdam.

While many of our top boxers are currently in training camp at UUJ for the European Games in Minsk, a small panel went to Holland last night for some competitive action.

While the Netherlands would not be a major boxing nation – although the have been growing rapidly recently – the hosts emerged victorious on a competitive night.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Aidan Walsh was dominant in his fight but there were losses for Wayne Kelly, Emmet Brennan, Paul McCullagh, and Kane Tucker – with the last two making their senior international debuts.

Teenage light heavy Tucker was especially unlucky, dropping Dutch boxing legend Peter Mullenburg heavily in the second round of their clash but losing out on a dubious split-decision to the Olympian.

Facing Holland’s other boxing big name, light welter Wayne Kelly was forced to retire in the second round of his clash with Enrico La Cruz due to a bad gash on his cheek.
