Introducing: Keane McMahon

Keane McMahon is ready to translate his amateur success to the booming Irish pro scene

The six-time underage national champion and Irish international has signed up with It’s A Bout Boxing Ireland and is ready to bring his slick style to the paid ranks.

Explaining his decision to ditch the vest, the 22 year old welterweight told Irish-Boxing.com that “it was always something I wanted to do. I think the most important thing about me moving to the pro ranks was the buzz that’s being created in Irish pro boxing at the moment and I really want to be a part of that.”

It was certainly a big decision for McMahon, who boasts a decorated background. He detailed how “I had a huge amateur career. I had 134 amateur fights with 111 wins. My most notable achievements would be winning six Irish national titles from schoolboy to junior level. I also represented Ireland on 20 odd occasions including the 2008 European Schoolboys and the 2011 Brandenburg Cup.”

Describing his style, McMahon said that “I would like to consider myself a boxer-puncher. I have solid fundamentals a good jab and I’m a big body puncher for a tall guy. But most of all I’m a slick fighter with good shot selection.”

“If I could describe myself as any fighter present or past it would be Bernard Hopkins, maybe a little bit more exciting though. But B-Hop was someone who always got it done.”

One of numerous fighters turning pro this year, McMahon’s immediate aims are standard, and he outlined that “the plan for 2017 is just to be kept busy. I’m a professional boxing baby and I just want to soak up as much experience as I can. I realize the pros are a different ball game so getting all the experience I can is vital.”

“My overall goal for my career is to just fulfill my potential. I know how good I am and I know if I put the work in and stay loyal to the people around me I will achieve huge things.”
