Injured Lee Reeves impresses Boxing Insiders on New York bow

It seems that everyone was impressed with the performance of Lee Reeves [3(2)-0] at Madison Square Garden except the fighter himself.

The Limerick native registered a shut-out win over American Edward Torres in a four-round welterweight contest, the opening undercard bout of Michael Conlan’s annual New York night.

Such was the quality of the slick southpaw’s performance that it earned him fan praise, journalist respect. and even some love from those within Top Rank that witnessed if from ringside.

However, the confident operator points out he is capable of a lot more.

Reeves revealed that he fought with a sprained thumb and, as a result, elected to stay in second gear for the twelve minutes.

“The only positive I take from that performance is doing the full four rounds,” a somewhat downbeat Reeves told Irish-Boxing.com before revealing the full context.

“I didn’t come out of second gear in the fight due to a badly sprained thumb. I believe I would have stopped him if I could hit fully, but fair play he was a tough cookie.”

“[People from Top Rank] said they were really impressed with me and all the writers said they want to keep a future close relationship with me so that’s good because I have a lot more to show.”

While Reeves added further green interest for an Irish heavy crowd, he wasn’t the star of the show. That honour fell yet again to Michael Conlan but, having witnessed the fanfare and excitement surrounding the Top Rank fighter, 24-year-old Reeves has been given further motivation to work his way to the top.

The Corpus Christi graduate noted how “it does motivate you. I know what kind of potential I have and I know nothing is out of my reach.”

“I have some big nights ahead in my future,” he continues before labeling the Madison Square Garden experience ‘surreal’.

“It was fantastic and surreal to fight in the world’s most famous stadium and in only my third fight.”

Having come from left field and debuting in Canada under the radar, there is now genuine excitement building around Reeves but, despite three impressive displays and a confident approach, he is happy to stay patient for now.

The Treaty City man outlined how “my plan now is to keep learning and progressing. I have a lot to learn and need to settle into the pro style more.”

“My promoter [Lee Baxter] is gonna keep me busy so that wont be a problem.”
