‘Increasingly Bigger Bang’ Casey confident of Walker win

Limerick’s Myles Casey will be looking to win a second Irish title in a new weightclass this Friday when he takes on Kurt Walker in the Elite bantamweight decider at the National Stadium.

Casey is now campaigning at 56kg following a move up from flyweight after failing to make weight for the European Championships, and has ended his quest for a place at next Summer’s Olympics.

Ahead of his clash with the Canal star, Casey explained his move up, noting how “I tried to keep the dream alive for Rio at 52kg but the weight was impossible.”

“In my own mind I kept thinking I could make it, but it was time to move up – I had to face the facts.”

Indeed, instead of feeling sorry for himself, the brother of Willie ‘Big Bang’ Casey is looking at the positives and his own heavy hands, reasoning that “I feel more explosive, I can feel the shots going the way I want them to.”

While the Munster man and Walker have never officially fought before, Casey revealed how they have met in the ring previously, and believes that this may lead to some underestimation on the part of Walker, arguing that “I sparred Kurt in the High Performance but I was making 52kg when I was sparring him.”

“I’m fully convinced it’s gonna be a different fight, he might not think it will, but I know in my mind it will.”

“I believe that I’ll take that belt off him, I’m confident of doing it!”
