In the know fighter backs powerful Dominic Donegan to go far

Dominic Donegan [1-0] has been endorsed and backed to succeed by one Liam Griffiths.

The Sussex journey man may not be one of the biggest names in the game or a member of the boxing family that has his opinion regularly sought after and shared in the wider media.

However, considering he is an 86 fight veteran Griffiths is as well positioned as anyone to pass judgement.

The English journeyman renowned for being difficult to look good against has been with a host of prospects and early days fighters and has first hand experience of what makes a good fighter.

It seems he saw enough in one of only two active Cavan fighters to predict he will go far in the game.

Donegan debuted against the 32 year old on Celtic Clash 8 and managed to drop a fighter who has only been stopped three times in 82 defeats.

While Doengan was expected to win, the manner in which he performed against the journeyman impressed the watching crowd and it seems his opponent.

“He was chatting away to me after the fight.  He couldn’t believe that was my first fight. He said that I am a very hard hitter and will go a long way in the pro game,” Donegan told Irish-boxing.com reflecting on his paid bow.

“I think my debut went to plan. I did what I said I was going to do. I said I was going to be in control of the fight from start to finish and if I seen a opening I would take it.”

Donegan did take that opening and put Griffiths on the seat of his pants. The fighter claims he always knew he had damage capable power, but thinks that knockdown means the fans are now aware he can bang too.

“I always had confidences in my power. Dropping Liam I think, anyone that was watching was surprised because he does not go down easy and he has been in with great lads.”

It was a somewhat exciting start from the confident fighter and thinks heat up even more, as less than a month from his debut Donegan gets to trade leather in the historic venue that is York Hall on the ‘Irish Invasion’ card.

The Drumgoon light middleweight shouldn’t be handed a stiff test as he continues to settle into the pro ranks, but that doesn’t bother him he is just looking forward to impressing in London.

“I think it’s a great venue to have my second pro fight in. My manager Stephen Sharp done well getting me on the show, Boxing Ireland is the only way forward!

“I have never been before but I am very excited about going and getting on that stage . I really don’t mind what opponent is put in front of me. All I can do is box who they put in front of me.”

The quick turn around between fights is something ‘Dom the Bomb’ is also happy with pointing out it’s like getting two fights worth of experience out of two camps.

“I think it’s great to get a fight so close after my debut. It’s like killing the one training camp with the two fights. I get to build up that experience.”
