“I’m not going home for a holiday” – Clancy wins in Australia and calls out Hyland

Gearoid Clancy got back to winning ways this morning in Australia.

The Sydney-based Connemara lightweight bounced back from two consecutive competitive ten-round losses to Brendan Saunders and Nort Beauchamp with a win against Ray Thompson.

A six-round affair at Club Punchbowl, the Oughterard puncher was involved in an exciting scrap with the game Thompson which was eventually scored unanimously in favour of ‘The Galway Assassin’ (60:54, 59:55, 58:56), who landed the cleaner, crisper, shots throughout.

The win sees Clancy move to 6(1)-4(0), while Thompson drops to 1(0)-8(4). It is a first victory for the Connacht puncher since his triumph over Brendan Saunders last November.

Now back on the horse, Clancy used his post-fight interview in the ring in Sydney to put his name forward as an opponent for Irish title hopeful Paul Hyland Jr. Earlier this week the 32 year old told Irish-Boxing.com of his intentions to return home in 2017, and he now wants a big fight when he gets here.

Clancy revealed that “I’ve been keeping my eye on things back in Ireland at the moment, I’ve been watching the lightweights back there and Paul Hyland Jr is looking for someone to fight for the Irish title. I’m more than happy to take that fight, I’d love to go back to Ireland.”

“I want that fight. I’m not going home for a holiday, it’s a fight I can win, I’m not going back for the weather, believe me!”

“I’ve done two ten rounders, two eight rounders, I’m more than qualified.”

“I’d love to bring the Irish belt back to Australia.”
