“I would beat him” – Paddy Gallagher has Frankie Gavin plan

Belfast welterweight Paddy Gallagher [13(8)-3(0)] is hoping he Khan get a fight with former World amateur champion and professional World title challenger Frankie Gavin.

Former Irish light welterweight champion Gavin [25(15)-3(2)] called out one Amir Khan via Irish-Boxing.com last week, stating the fight would make sense if he won the IBO’s version of the World title by beating Bethuel Ushona in late March.

‘The Pat Man’ believes the Birmingham-born fighter of Tipperary and Derry heritage has been clever by looking for a bout with Matchroom’s latest signing, but is himself keen on a Gavin clash.

“I think it’s a smart move for him to call out Khan,” Gallagher told Irish-Boxing.com.

“It makes sense. It’s a good fight and big payday for him before he retires and if he does have that world title it means Khan could take it to get back in the elite mix,” he continued before stating his desire to trade leather with the former amateur star.

“I’d love a fight with him A fight with him alone I’d love because he’s a name and the type of known fighter I want. Plus if I was to get the fight I would beat him. Then if there’s a world title involved I’d be all over it.”

Whether Gallagher is at the stage in his career that would make him attractive to a fighter who has fought for World and European honours remains to be seen.

Not to mention if he has the IBO title – although granted it’s not overly recognised by fight fans – he may attract more lucrative suitors.

However, the 28-year-old Lenadoon puncher sees no harm in putting his name in the mix and could be doing so knowing it might be a fit for the potential Windsor Park fight night which will take place in August if Carl Frampton beats Nonito Donaire on April 21st.

Indeed, Gallagher – who has a somewhat unique IBO desire – has already been hounding his management team for the fight.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist outlined how “I’ve sent a plan through to my manager and hope it comes off. I’ve mentioned him and said I wanted the fight for a load of months now.”

“With him having the world title – presumably he wins it – then I would have to earn my way to the fight. I wouldn’t expect to get it handed to me with the position I’m in now.”

The MTK fighter has yet to be confirmed on a 2018 fight card, but hopes to have news in of a scrap very soon.

“As it stands I’m waiting to confirmation for a fight here in a few weeks. I’ve a couple of sparring sessions coming up across the water.”
