‘I need the bigger fights sooner rather than later’ – Donnelly excited about Ultimate Boxxer springbroad

Steven Donnelly [5(1)-0] is ready to leap up the pro ladder with victory in this weekend’s Ultimate Boxxer tournament.

‘The Donn’ competes for the Golden Robe and a sizable cash some in the Indigo at The O2, live on BT Sports this weekend, but has his eye on a bigger prize.

The first Olympian to enter the Prizefighter styled contest believes outright victory will raise both his standing and his profile – and thus propel him toward bigger fights.

“I am hoping a big win at this tournament will lead me way up the ladder for a big shot at one of the titles that progresses me further. I need to be in the bigger fights sooner rather than later,” the eager to move forward light middleweight explained.

The Ballymena man has previously predicted victory in the eight man contest, but speaking this week was forecasting entertainment.

The 31-year-old believes all his fellow contestants will be as motivated to win and will do all the can to achieve victory knowing they can change their careers and lives in just one night.

“I’m really excited for this tournament and I think it will be no different from the other Ultimate Boxxer tournaments as it will be fantastic viewing,” he continued.

“The format provides entertainment and with a nice prize at the end it means we will all be determined to win, so make sure you tune in to see it unfold.”

The Commonwealth games medal winner has been handed a quarter-final tie with  Aaron Collins. Donnelly’s first opponent had to withdraw through injury and he is now pitted against a 27-year-old opponent coming out of the semi-pro scene

Due to his elite amateur skills and Olympic background Donnelly is seen by many as the favourite for the competition.

Also competing in Ultimate Boxer V will be  Joshua Ejakpovi, Kingsley Egbunike, Kaan Hawes, Lenny Fuller, Lewis Syrett and Sean Robinson.

Last month saw Sauerland fighter Lawal emerge victorious amongst the cruiserweights at Ultimate Boxxer IV in Manchester – his triumph elevated him to the 7th best Cruiserweight in the UK division rankings. Defeated finalist Damian Chambers also saw his reputation enhanced, as did 21-year-old Rhasian Earlington who is now ranked at no. 11.
