PUNCH STATS – The detailed CompuBox numbers from Jaime Munguia v Dennis Hogan

They aren’t an exact science, indeed they are merely two observers pressing buttons during a fight, but punch stats can tell a story.

That certainly seems to be the case for the official CompuBox numbers for Jaime Munguia v Dennis Hogan.

The Brisbane-based Irishman dropped a hugely controversial majority decision in Monterrey, Mexico, last night.

Most had Hogan winning the fight – including the DAZN broadcast team and, seemingly, Munguia’s corner given that they instructed him he needed to go for the knockout which did not come in the final round.

However, scores of 114-114, 113-115, and a horrible 112-116 from judge Waleska Roldan saw Munguia get the nod in front of around 14,000 home fans – and thirty who had travelled from either Ireland or Australia to cheer on Hogan.

While the young Mexican threw 671 punches to Hogan’s 493, the Kilcullen man landed one more throughout the fight (123 to 122). Hogan, light on his feet, was able to frustrate the, at times, wild-swinging Munguia and this can be seen in the vast difference in their respective total punch connect percentages – 24.9 to 18.2.

Hogan’s jab, a potent weapon, hit home 31 out of 137 times compared to 25 of 268 for Munguia – who used the punch more as a loose and largely ineffective range-finder.

Munguia did land more ‘power punches’ – 97 to 92 – but, for CompuBox, a ‘power punch’ is defined as anything other than a jab and, of course, the weight of these punches needs to be taken into account when scoring.

The summation of the bout from CompuBox stated that it was an “uneven performance from Munguia, looking for the KO all night in front of his hometown fans. Munguia landed an average of 10 of 56 punches per round to 10 of 41 for Hogan, who appeared to land the harder punches all fight.”
