Hanney happy with BUI welterweight Irish title stipulation

Jake Hanney [5(4)-2(1)] will, as the BUI have stipulated, fight at welterweight  before he goes on to challenge for the Irish title in Cork.

‘The Wizard’ had agreed in principle to step in and replace Jay Byrne on the top of the Leeside Revolution bill, the first pro bill to visit the Rebel county in over a decade.

The shows promoter Martin Horgan and Boxing Ireland had agreed terms and a mouthwatering headline between local favourite Noel Murphy and the Dubliner was confirmed.

Despite the fact Hanney last appeared at light welterweight in a TV fight with Victor Rabei it was also revealed the Irish welterweight title  remained up for grabs.

However, the BUI confirmed the fight would only be sanctioned on one condition- and that was Hanney would secure victory over ‘legitimate’ welterweight before the proposed July 20 clash with the American based Cork fighter.

A bout between Noel Murphy and Jake Hanney for the Irish Welterweight title has been sanctioned by the BUI Ratings Committee SUBJECT to Jake fighting and beating a legitimate Welterweight opponent.

That fight  has been arranged as the East Wall fighter revealed he will be fighting in Portsmouth on June 29 just over three weeks before the agreed Irish title fight.

Hanney will face a yet to be confirmed opponent on a Ballingal Promotions show.

The fight may be seen as a distraction or even a risk – in terms of injury or cuts- by some, but considering the former Oz based fighter has only fought once in two years his team see the rounds as extremely beneficial.

Indeed, according to the fighter a four rounder was always the plan.

“The fight is actually good, we were gonna try get out anyways before it,” Hanney explained to Irish-boxing.com

“A mouth injury forced me off the Belfast card a couple of weeks ago, so we are delighted. The extra rounds will be great. It makes sense in every way. Now the cobwebs are gone we can work on things and get more rounds in and tune our timing up for Cork.”
