Golden Boy wanted to make Munguia-Hogan II but Mexican turned it down

Jaime Munguia [33(26)-0-0] knocked back a Dennis Hogan [28(7)-2(0)-1] rematch despite the fact his promotional partners Golden Boy wanted it.

The Mexican was handed the chance to put the controversy surrounding his victory over the Kildare fighter to bed when Golden Boy offered him the chance to repeat their April world title clash in his next outing.

However, the 22-year-old refused the fight. Instead he will top an October 19th bill recent foe Hogan will also appear on against a yet to be confirmed opponent.

The WBO light-middleweight world title holder and his team had promised the Australian based Irish fighter a return immediately after the controversial scores where read out in the ring.

However, Munguia, who it has to be noted is co-promoted by Fernando Beltran’s Zanfer Promotions, his original backers, elected against fighting Hogan again.

The decision is proof the Mexican knows for sure he really lost the world title fight and  is equally aware the same thing will happen if a return was made according to DDP’s Paul Keegan.

Indeed. the promoter believes people will now always wonder if the young fighter has the kind of heart Mexican boxers are renowned for if he continues to avoid a repeat.

“I think there will asterisk beside his name for the rest of his career,” Keegan told Irish-Boxing.com.

“We really thought he was one of those proud Mexicans, like all the Mexican greats who have represented boxing so well over the years.

“I am not sure he can be seen in that light anymore and you’d worry for him that the Mexican fans won’t see him like that anymore.

“He turned down a rematch. Golden Boy offered it to him and he turned it down. It wasn’t as if his team where trying to prevent him from taking it or trying to protect him. He was offered it by Golden Boy and he turned it down.

“I think that just proves he knows Dennis definitively beat him and that he thinks Dennis would beat him again. It’s disappointing because he offered us the rematch in the ring, but has since turned it down.”

DDP will now try and secure Hogan mandatory status for a second time, but Keegan still doesn’t believe that will force a rematch.

“We are now working to try and get Dennis mandatory again and then we can try force the fight, but I honestly think Munguia will just vacate and move up once Dennis gets that close to fighting him.”
