Golden Boy and Aaron McKenna predict homecoming ahead of high-profile Hollywood fight

Aaron McKenna [4(3)-0] believes he could be fighting in front of the ‘Farney Army’ in the “not too distant future.”

The Monaghan welterweight heads to Hollywood this weekend where he fights for the a fifth time as a pro when he trades leather with Mexican Rolando Mendivil at the Avolan Theater.

While Ireland’s youngest pro has been generating some excitement among Irish fight fans as well as earning plaudits from the likes of Mickey Ward and Sugar Ray Leonard, all of the 19 year old’s fights have played out Stateside.

It’s not quite ‘out of sight, out of mind’, but it seems to be something Golden Boy want to remedy.

Indeed, fight legend and Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya requested that the Smithborough teen fight on the Hollywood card as it was the promotional company’s first Facebook Live event.

The card on Saturday night is headlined by recent featherweight world title challenger JoJo Diaz versus Jesus Rojas while McKenna’s four-round bout will open the broadcasted portion of the bill.

De La Hoya is keen to for Irish fans to watch one of his three Irish fighters – along with Jason Quigley and Spike O’Sullivan – live and it seems plans may be in place to ensure said fans get to see him in the flesh relatively soon.

“Oscar requested that I fight on Facebook live to cater for the Irish support back home,” McKenna told Irish-Boxing.com.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Irish fans to watch and support me on my journey here in the States. I think that it could be possible that I will be boxing in Ireland in the not to distant future.”

“I would love to fight in my home county, Monaghan,” added ‘The Silencer’.

McKenna, whose brother Stevie has become his Sheer Sports stable mate, has impressed since turning over.

Four wins, three of which came before the final bell from a 19-year-old on a mission.

The Courage Tshabalala-trained fighter has times on his hands but his Golden Boy connection, fighting style, baby face, and impressive performances have seen him not only secure backing from some big names but headlines worthy of a fighter with a lot more pro wins to his name.

However, the plaudits and media attention is not something McKenna pays much attention to, claiming training and improving have all his focus.

“To be honest I’m working that hard in the gym that I dont really notice the headlines too much. I like to stay very focused and dont allow myself to become distracted.”

“It’s great that boxing fans are enjoying my journey. I will continue to make sure that I’m in good shape and put in the hard work to become a world champion that’s where I get my enjoyment!”
