Going for Gold- Harrington’s historic run continues

Kellie Harrington is going for gold.

The Dublin light welterweight traded in her bronze with a brilliant semi final victory over Canada’s Sara Kali in AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan today.

The talented switch hitter, who amazingly is competing in her first major tournament,  is now guaranteed silver at the very least, but could become Ireland’s second ever female World champion.

Indeed Harrington is only the fifth Irish fighter to compete in a World senior championship decider adding her name to a list that includes Katie Taylor, Jason Quigley, Joe Ward and Micheal Conlan.

Harrington produced a masterclass and was well in control from first to last round. Nerves played a part in a first round, but in the second so impressive was the Dubliner that one judge scored it 10-8 in her favour.

From that point on Harrington dominated in style and eased her way into the final.
