Unseeded Underdog Ger Healy piles pressure on tournament favourites

The seeding system just takes more pressure off a fighter determined to come into Last Man Standing under the radar.

Gerard Healy [7(0)-4(1)-1] entered the eight-man single-elimination tournament as one of the early replacements and is well aware he isn’t being mentioned as one of the favourites.

That is just how the Belfast middleweight wants it as he plans to take those in the contest by surprise on Saturday night at the National Stadium.

As a result, ‘Boom Boom’ Healy wasn’t at all upset not to be seeded for the TG4-broadcast card yesterday evening.

Rather than an open draw, the four perceived top boxers have received seeds for the Prizefighter-style single-elimination competition in Dublin on Saturday night.

JJ McDonagh, Chris Blaney, Roy Sheahan and Jack Cullen will get to select a quarter-final opponent from the four unseeded fighters following the weigh-in.

Healy. alongside Nick Quigley, Owen Jobburn, and Vladimir Belujsky, is part of the unseeded pile and will be chosen tomorrow afternoon.

In that regard. Healy’s opponent fate is out of his hands, but he isn’t perturbed in the slightest.

“It is what it is,” Healy said when asked about the seeding process.

“I am ready for anybody,” noted the Ray Ginley-trained fighter. “It suits me to the ground being the underdog and it makes it easier for me.”

“I feel confident, there is no pressure on me, it’s all on the top seeds,” he added before stressing he doesn’t care which of the top seeds he opens against at the National Stadium on Saturday.

“I couldn’t pick between them there all good fighters. I don’t care which of the seeds I get to be honest,” added the nonplussed Lenadoon fighter.
