Taking things Lightly – Gary Cully aiming for 135lbs title shot

Gary Cully‘s statuesqe frame has many questioning how long his stay at lightweight will be.

6’2″ and 23 years old, some feel that the Naas lightweight will ‘fill out’ and end up fighting at light welter or above once he starts moving into title contention.

However, Cully [7(4)-0] is adamant that he can win world titles at 135lbs and reveals that, rather than struggling at the weight, he is still building and improving in one of boxing’s premier classes.

The Sarto souhpaw boxes in Belfast tomorrow night where he faces tough Nicaraguan journeyman Brayan Mairena over six at the Ulster Hall and weighed in today bang on championship weight – without a major cut having only found out last night that he would be weighing in today rather than Friday.

Cully has been seeing the improvements in the gym under coaches Pete Taylor and Niall Barrett and explains how “I’m growing into the weight quite well and my power is still developing. I’m still not fully grown into it and I’m still making the weight easy.”

“I’ve no plans to move up in weight any time soon – I want to win a title or two at lightweight to start with. My strength is definitely improving every camp.”

Following a frustrating start to 2018, Cully rounded off the year with statement stoppage wins over Jordan Ellison and Moses Kambuluta.

Going into this fight, however, the lilywhite is promising a more considered approach.

“I’ve brought it back to basics,” he notes.

“I think since my last fight I’m bringing it back to what I’m good at, which is boxing, rather than just standing and going for power all the time. ”

“I’ve improved on my feinting and my skills rather than sitting down on every shot trying to go for knockouts.”

Cully, who hopes to fight for a BUI Celtic title in the near future having seen numerous title fights fall through, is looking forward to a big atmosphere and a big win tomorrow to set up a big year.

The Kildare stylist states that “I’ve never fought in Ulster Hall but from what I’m hearing, it’s great.”

“I saw [Sean] McComb saying it’s his favourite venue. When it fills up, I imagine the atmosphere in there will be electric.”
