Gary Cully given big step-up on Belfast bill

Top Irish prospect Gary Cully [8(4)-0] has had a major step-up confirmed for his next fight.

It has been announced this afternoon that the Kildare lightweight will face well-known French road warrior Renald Garrido [24(6)-22(0)-3] over eight rounds on the #MTKFightNight at the Ulster Hall in Belfast on Friday June 21st.

So far, the toughest match-up of 22-year-old Cully’s career so far, Garrido brings relentless pressure to the table and has upset previous.

While his record is chequered, ‘Lionheart’ has upset previous and has given fighters from lightweight to welter tough fights. Having scored big wins over unbeaten former top amateurs Bradley Saunders and Daouda Sow, Garrido would win the French light welterweight title in 2016 – a belt he reclaimed last year.

Never one to be dominated or stopped, Garrido has given the likes of Tyrone McKenna and Frankie Gavin really close fights and has also been on the end of some dodgy decisions – losses to Cletus Seldin and Faith Keles in 2017 especially.

An eccentric character who tows the line between lovable and annoying, the 35-year-old has already been messaging words of ‘encouragement’ to Cully in recent days.

It’s a big step-up for the Naas starlet who scored statement stoppage wins over Jordan Ellison and Moses Kambuluta at the tail-end of last year.

Cully is progression keen and goes into the fight looking to make a statement versus a familiar and tough foe.

Last time out ‘The Diva’ dominated Brayan Mairena over six rounds but a split knuckle forced a minor spell on the sidelines and ensured that Cully would not feature on the May 17th #MTKFightNight.

The fight, one of the chief supports to the light welter clash between Tyrone McKenna and Darragh Foley, will be shown live on YouTube and on the ESPN+ app in America.
