Gallagher: Macklin and I have unfinished World title business

JOE Gallagher claims he has unfinished World title business with Irish middleweight Matthew Macklin.

Macklin is back with trainer Joe Gallagher three years after the Machester based trainer with Sligo heritage trained him for his by now infamous clash with Felix Sturm.

The former Irish, British and European champion re teamed up with Gallagher after recent trainer Jamie Moore was injured and his WBC middleweight title eliminator with Jorge Sebastien Heiland was cancelled last month.

Macklin is now set to fight on the undercard of Paul Smith’s WBO super-middleweight title fight against Arthur Abraham on September 27 where Gallagher will man his corner.

It has yet to be revealed if the re link up with coach, who looks after the likes of Scott Quigg, Anthony Crolla and the Smith brothers, is permanent or temporary, but Gallagher feels he has unfinished business with the ‘Tipperary Tornado’.

“Matthew approached me last month about working together again,” Gallagher told the Manchester Evening News.

“He had approached me before to work with him in America and Spain, but logistically I couldn’t do it.Now he’s joined up with the rest of my camp in Bolton, where he can get excellent sparring.

“We’ve got unfinished business after coming so close to winning a world title when we last worked together. Some people are writing Matthew off after his defeat to Gennady Golovkin, but he is fighter with something to prove and I believe he’s got a great chance of fulfilling his dream of winning a world title.”
