Fighter Favourites: Tyrone McKenna

Every Monday we ask Irish fighters their favourites from the world of boxing.

This week it is the turn of BUI light welterweight champ Tyrone McKenna [12(4)-0-1]

Q: Favourite Current Fighter?
A: There’re two fighters I love watching – Japanese bantamweight world champ Naoya Inoue and Errol Spence Jnr. Naoya has serious power and class bodyshots and is always an exciting fighter to watch, and then Errol Spence is an unreal, hard-hitting southpaw who is climbing the ranks very quickly and dominating the likes of Chris Algieri with more ease than any previous boxers

Q: Favourite of All Time
A: I love watching tall, skinny southpaws for some reason. My favourite tall, skinny southpaw to watch (apart from myself) is Michael Nunn, a two-weight world champ. I love the way he fights, he had it all, speed, power, high work rate, and is amazing at slipping and defence. If you’ve never watched him, definitely check him out

Q: Favourite Irish Fighter?
A: That would be Andy Lee. He was unreal as an amateur and a great pro. He’s been i some of the best turn-arounds in a fight I’ve ever seen. Like the Jackson fight where he was hurt bad and ended up KOing jackson with a right hook. And then when he was fighting Matt Korobov and was a serious underdog and stopped him with another great right hand. I was in fact Matty’s sparring partner for that fight and, after the camp, I put £50 on Andy Lee for the KO which won me a lot of money… so that’s probably why he’s my favourite fighter.

Q: Favourite Fight?
A: I love wars, so either the Ward v Gatti fight which everyone has witnessed or Castillo v Corrales which was an amazing fight where they both went at it with hard combos throughout the fight and then that amazing 10th round to top it off where castillo got dropped twice and got up to stop corrales with an unreal right hand.

Q: Favourite of your own Fights
A: Well that’s an easy one – the last fight I had with Sean Creagh where I picked up the BUI Celtic belt. It was my first tv fight and title fight, but even the lead up was exciting. The fight itself didnt disappoint being fought at a high pace. Hopefully my next fight is even better in two weeks time when I fight another undefeated Dubliner Jake Hanney
