Fighter Favorites: ‘The Buncrana Banger’ John Hutchinson

Our weekly feature Fighter Favourites sees us ask Irish pugilists their preferences from the world of boxing.

This week it is the turn of Donegal light middleweight John Hutchinson [8(2)-2(0)-2] who fights next Friday (St Patrick’s Day) in Perth.

Q: Favourite Current Fighter?
A: Lee Selby
he goes from the nicest down to earth person to the hardest working and most talented fighter out there. He’s an absolute joy to watch. Even in sparring, people come to watch him spar. The highest of levels of fighters, he makes them look average with his timing, fast hands, slick skills, ring craft, and he carries massive power for his size. He has the tactics for everything over most fighters out there. The night he fought Martin Lindsay was a master class. Him and Carl Frampton will be a good one!

Q: Favourite Fighter of All Time?
A: Johnny Tapia
. His background and his upbringing, he had such a hard life and it made him the hard person he was. What a fighter! Was always a big fan of Ricky Hatton’s come forward style too, packing out stadiums, they were some great nights!

Q: Favourite Irish Fighter?
A: I was a big fan of John Duddy. I went out to America to watch him in New York. But Matthew Macklin for had some nights too. Robbed of a world title in the Felix Sturm fight. The Jamie Moore fight was class too – technical and he also left in all in the ring with heart, giving everything he had.

Q: Favourite Fight?
A: Gatti v Ward. Every one of them fights were crackers. They had toe tight action from both fighters and were grueling fights. Eubank v Benn too, they were serious feckers!

Q: Favourite of your own Fights?
A: Probably the Boston fight [v Robert Brando Hunt] for the atmosphere in the Royale. It was 220 tickets that I sold, the atmosphere had the place shaking as I came out to bagpipes. It was so class! I also enjoyed beating Gerald Healy up all the time in that amateurs and the pros!
