There are tough fights galore today in Eastern Europe with five Irish boxers in major championships action.

Four boxers face Last 16 bouts at the World Youths in Russia, while there is a massive semi-final for Christina Desmond at the European Championships in Sofia.

Starting us off at 12:15pm (all times Irish time) in St Petersburg is Michael Nevin. The Portlaoise middleweight fights Frenchman Moreno Fendero in Ring B.

Then at 1:30pm, also in Ring B, Limerick super heavyweight Kevin Sheehy gets his campaign underway. It will be a baptism of fire for the St Francis big man, who will make his international debut against Azerbaijan’s 2015 World Junior champion Mahammad Abdullayev.

Starting off the the evening session at 3:00pm in Ring A is Limerick lightweight Paddy Donovan. The OLOL southpaw fights Azeri Sarkhan Aliiyev – who was edged out by Cork’s Oliver McCarthy in the semi-finals of this year’s European Youths.

Finally for the boys, at 4:00pm in Ring A, Galway light welter Gabriel Dossen takes on Hugo Micallef from tiny Monaco.

Then, at 6:00pm in Bulgaria, we have the big one. Cork middleweight Christina Desmond, Ireland’s last remaining fighter at the European Championships, boxes in the semi-finals against Frenchwoman Maily Nicar, looking to guarantee a silver medal.
