European Rankings update – September shifts for Irish fighters

The updated European Boxing Union rankings have been released and there have been some changes for Irish boxers.

The rankings, accounting for all bouts up until September 24th, have six Irish boxers listed.

Wicklow’s Katie Taylor [6(4)-0] has moved up one spot at lightweight, and is now the #1-ranked boxer at the weight. However the Bray boxer looks set to challenge WBA champion Anahi Ester Sanchez in Cardiff next weekend.

Luke Keeler [13(5)-2(1)] remains at #11 in the middleweight rankings, but will be out of the ring for the next few months following shoulder surgery to correct a long-standing niggle.

At super featherweight Anto Cacace [15(7)-0] holds firm at #5 at super featherweight and will be back in action on the Celtic Clash 4 bill in Dublin on Saturday December 2nd.

Also at super featherweight, Irish champion James Tennyson [19(15)-2(2)] remains at #11 ahead of his fight this Saturday Darren Traynor in Belfast.

Super flyweight is not a weight considered at European level, so Belfast’s Jamie Conlan [19(11)-0] is ranked at bantamweight. ‘The Mexican’ is ranked at #2, however his attentions lie elsewhere with an IBF super flyweight title challenge against Jerwin Ancajas in Belfast on Saturday November 18th at the SSE Odyssey Arena.

Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] remains the #1 featherweight. ‘The Jackal’ fights on the same card as Conlan next month, taking on Mexican Horacio Garcia over ten as he looks to prepare for a return to world level.

The five male fighters also feature in the EBU European Union rankings (there is no EU title for women).

#10 Middleweight – Luke Keeler (-)
#5 Super Featherweight – Anto Cacace (-)
#10 Super Featherweight – James Tennyson (-)
#1 Featherweight – Carl Frampton (-)
#2 Bantamweight – Jamie Conlan (-)

Additionally, five more Irish boxers are also in the EU ladders.

Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-1(0] is down another place to #16 in the cruiserweight rankings. The Belfast big man returns to the ring after eleven months out this Saturday in a six rounder on the big Sky bill at the SSE Odyssey Arena.

Peter McDonagh [28(2)-28(2)-1], formerly #18 at welterweight, has been reclassified to #18 at light middleweight following his extremely impressive win over Shayne Singleton on the Parker-Fury undercard – which took place at 154lbs.

Phil Sutcliffe Jr [13(8)-2(1)] remains #28 at light welterweight.

In the super featherweight rankings, Declan Geraghty [15(4)-2(1)] is up one spot to #18. However, the Dubliner will leave this ladder next month when he takes on Jono Carroll in a big rematch at the SSE Odyssey Arena for the IBF East/West Europe belt.

Finally, Marco McCullough [17(10)-4(3)] remains at #18 at featherweight. The Shankill man currently has no date, but will be hoping to also appear at the Odyssey next month.
