Eamer Coughlan crashes out of World Championships following all-out war

Cork’s Eamer Coughlan bowed out of the World Youth Championships in Russia following a split decision loss in his opening fight this afternoon

The Riverstown bantamweight took on Kazakh Samatali Toltayev in the Round of 32 in St Petersburg, and was edged out on the cards following a phenomenal brawl.

The Leeside 17 year old made a typically quick start, bring the fight to Toltayev. While the Asian was able to match Coughlan early on, the Rebel teen would grind him down as the round progressed, cornering him twice and rocking him back with some nice lefts.

A similar second saw Coughlan, always on the front foot, grow into the round and have success late on.

Perhaps having the spring punched out of his legs, Toltayev stood toe-to-toe for the entirety of the final round, with both boxers landing considerable amounts.

The fight went to the five scoring judges at ringside, with fou siding with the Kazakh, overruling the sole official who plumped for Coughlan, thus eliminating the Irishman.
