Dominic Donegan closes in on Celtic title fight with victory in Spain

Dominic Donegan impressed some high profile names in Spain tonight [Saturday].

The Cavan man fought on a Sergio Martinez promoted card in Polideportivo Vicente Trueba, Torrelavega alongside the likes of former Bernard Dunne and Carl Frampton foe Kilo Martinez.

The light middleweight took on Miguel Aguilar on a sizable Spanish based card and went six for the first time in his career.

The experience journey man has only been stopped 12 times in 62 defeats and is noted for giving prospect rounds.

The fighter who went the distance with Steven Donnelly and Paddy Gallagher lived up to his billing and stayed the course with ‘Da’ Bomb’.

The Solider looked comfortable throughout and managed a shutout out 60-54 points win.

The victory wraps up a relatively impressive 2019 for the new to the game Boxing Ireland fighter and makes him BUI Celtic title eligible.

Donegan can now boast four pro wins despite only turning over in May.

The Jonathan Lewins trained fighter will most likely appear again on Celtic Clash 10 and could be involved in a domestic dust up that night.

Things are interesting around entry level at 154lbs with the likes of Graham McCormack, Cillian Reardon, Eddie Tracey and fellow Cavan man Owen Duffy all looking toward the BUI Celtic title.

Donegan is no certainly in that mix and speaking before Saturday’s fight he was certainly open to domestic match ups.

“Anything could happen in 2020. These six rounds put me in the line for the Celtic title so you never know what will happen. But whatever my team decide to go with, I will be happy, because they’re putting me on the right road so far.”

The win see’s the Ulster fighter improve to 4-0 with one knockout while his opponent slips to 11-63-1.
