DISASTER – Ray Moylette v Larry Fryers AND Niall O’Connor v Luis Arcon OFF

In massively disappointing news, the two remaining big fights featuring Irish boxers this weekend in Boston are OFF.

It has been confirmed tonight that the all-Irish New England light welterweigt title fight between Ray Moylette and Larry Fryers as well as Niall O’Connor‘s clash with Olympian Luis Arcon have been cancelled.

The two fights were due to take place on a Murphys Boxing card at the Encore Casino in Boston Harbour on Friday night but have now been shelved after both Moylette and O’Connor were unable to enter America.

The Celtic Warriors pair were held up by visa issues which were unable to be rectified in time.

Coach Paschal Collins announced the disappointing news tonight and has pledged that both bouts will be refixed.

Mayo’s Moylette [11(4)-1(0)] was due to make his long-awaited return following defeat to Christian Uruzquieta in an intriguing fight with the New York-based Fryers [10(3)-1(1)].

It is currently unclear whether the in-form Monaghan man, who is not associated with Murphys Boxing, will remain on the card.

O’Connor [5(4)-0] has also not fought since the Moylette-Uruzquieta bill last December and was set to take a leap up in class versus top Venezuelan prospect Arcon [7(7)-0].

Pitting Murphys Boxing’s Arcon, who is set to compete at light welter in the PanAmerican Games later this month, and Fryers against each other is a possible solution but one which is hard to envision.

The news rounds off a rather rotten week for Irish boxing, with Tommy McCarthy also having seen his big fight in Italy on Thursday pulled.

The Belfast cruiser was due to face WBC International champion Fabio Turchi in Rome but the Italian has pulled out – with McCarthy boxing now in an eight rounder.

In addition, Tipperary debutant Randal Barlow had his London bow this weekend scrapped at short notice.
