Disaster for Casey at European Championships

Limerick’s Myles Casey will not participate at the European Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria, as he has failed to make the 52kg flyweight limit.

The southpaw impressed at the recent European Games in Azerbaijan where he won his opening bout before losing a tight decision in the round of 16 to home favourite, and eventual gold medalist, Elvin Mamishzade.

The St. Francis’s BC fighter was hoping to win himself a first major international medal in Bulgaria and qualify for the upcoming World Championships in Doha, Qatar, this October.

However, after this disappointment, the 22 year old must now refocus for the upcoming National Elite Senior Championships this Winter where he will seek to retain his national title and ensure his place at the Olympic qualifiers next year.
