Debut joy for The Joker – Roy Sheahan starts pro career with a win

Roy Sheahan got his professional career off to a winning start tonight.

The Kildare middleweight made his pro debut in the historic York Hall in London and claimed a points win on a Mickey Helliet ‘Hellraiser Boxing’ card.

The four-time Senior champion has made the move into the pro ranks at an advanced age with the intention of fighting in the big-money ‘Ireland’s Last Man Standing’ competition in March.

However, before he could box in the eight-man Prizefighter-style tournament, Sheahan needed to first register a win to prove his capabilities to the Boxing Union of Ireland – which he duly did tonight in Bethnal Greene.

The 2007 EU gold medalist outpointed experienced journeyman Jordan Grannum over four rounds, taking the bout on a scoreline of 40-36.

The bout was Sheahan’s first under pro coach Steven O’Rourke at the St Michael’s gym in Inchicore- having fought as an amateur out of St Michael’s Athy alongside fellow former amateur stars and current pro prospects Eric Donovan and Davey Oliver Joyce

‘The Joker’ Sheehan’s brand new professional record starts of at 1(0)-0, while Grannum drops to 2(0)-18(0).

The lilywhite will now go straight back into camp ahead of the big Last Man Standing competition in three weeks time where, live on TG4, he will vie with Nick Quigley, Chris Blaney, Jordan Latimer, Alfredo Meli, Gerard Healy, Sean McGlinchey, and Bernard Roe for the guaranteed €25,000 top prize.
