Dearbhla Rooney defeated in Olympic semi-final but Bronze medal looks likely

Leitrim featherweight Dearbhla Rooney has been defeated in the semi-finals of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires tonight but looks to be in line for a bronze medal.

The Sean McDermott’s puncher lost a second split-decision in a matter of months to Thailand’s Panpatchara Somnuek.

Rooney dominated American Roma Martinez in the quarter-finals to set up a rematch with the Asian Youth bronze medallist in the Argentine capital.

The Glenade puncher was edged out 3-2 by Somnuek in the World Youth Championships and was again edged out on a split after a big performance, this time 4-1, with cards of 30-27 x2, 29-28 x2, and 28-29.

It would look like Rooney will now go, along with Sligo flyweight Dean Clancy, into a box-off for bronze, however it is unclear whether this bout takes place.

In the bout proceeding Rooney’s this evening, Mexico’s Panamerican silver medallist Jennifer Carrillo stopped New Zealand wildcard Te Shelford-Edmonds in the second round.

The referee stepped in to stop the contest following two counts and, technically, there is no rule against the Kiwi novice taking her place in the box-off as she was not ‘knocked out’. Whether her national governing body allow Shelford-Edmonds to fight remains to be seen.

Earlier today, Clancy was defeated by Britain’s Hope Price in a repeat of their European Youth final also won by the Englishman. He fights Brazilian Luiz Olivera tomorrow for bronze.
