1930: The pound-for-pound greatest Irish boxer of all time, Jimmy McLarnin, knocked out reigning World lightweight champion Al Singer in a non-title bout at Yankee Stadium in New York. The somersaulting Down boxer floored the home fighter twice in the third round, putting Singer out for the count the second time.

2010: Belfast’s Brian Magee defended his European super middleweight title for the first time at the National Stadium in Dublin. Magee continued his late-career Renaissance with an eighth round retirement win over German Roman Aramyan at the home of Irish boxing.

2010: On the undercard in Dublin, Anto Fitzgerald defended his Irish super middleweight title in a capital derby with Robbie Long. The third clash of an epic trilogy, the inner-city boxer scored a 96-94 win over the Tallaght man to claim Dublin bragging rights.

1891: Cork’s Jack McAuliffe successfully defended his World lightweight title at the Granite Association Clubroom in New Jersey when his bout with Austin Gibbons was interrupted by police in the sixth round and the referee declared the Irishman, who was on top in the clash, the winner.

2009: Tyson Fury controversially defeated John McDermott to win the English heavyweight title. In what was just his eighth pro fight, the future World champion was awarded the bout, which many felt he lost, on a very wide 98-92 scoreline . The inevitable rematch took place the following Summer with Fury winning via ninth round stoppage.
