2008: The curtain came down on Ireland’s most successful World Youth Championships ever, with the Boys in Green taking home four medals from Guadalajara, led by Ray Moylette‘s gold.

The Islandeady fighter defeated (3:1) Kazakh Daniyar Yeleussinov, the recent Rio gold medalist at welterweight, in the lightweight final in Mexico. En-route to the decider Moylette had beaten Brazilian Jefferson Silva (21:2), Wales’s Fred Evans (11:9), Cuban Juan Alberto Garcia (10:2), and Belarussian Alexey Haletsich (5:2).

Light welterweight Jamie Kavanagh grabbed silver, squeezing past Czechian Zdenek Chladek (8:6) in the semi finals. The Dubliner also stopped Spaniard Doramas Placeres and Costa Rican Minor Javier Salazar, as well as outpointing (8:0) Italian Francesco Nespro. In the decider the Crumlin man was beaten (2:7) by Cuban Frank Isla.

Athy’s David Joe Joyce secured bronze in the welterweight class following a win (6:3) over South Korean Yeong Gil Kim. Joyce had previously beaten Kazakh Abuyazit Ugurchiyev (10:4), but the Irishman would fall in the last four to home fighter Oscar Molina (2:4).

At light heavyweight, Belfast’s Tommy McCarthy claimed bronze following a quarter final win (7:2) over Swede Pezhman Seifkhani. The Oliver Plunkett’s banger had previously stopped Lithuanian Ovidijus Martinkenas. McCarthy was narrowly (6:8) defeated in the semis by Russian Marten Magomedov.

Also on the Irish team were Belfast duo Ruairi Dalton and Tyrone McKenna who lost their opening bouts at flyweight and featherweight to Argentinian Alberto Melian (8:10) and American Kevin Rivers (5:16) respectively, while Dublin middleweight Bernard Roe lost his opener (4:5) to Ukrainian Volodymyr Savenko.

Finally there was Derry bantamweight Tyrone McCullagh who suffered a cruel fate, first scoring a stunning (11:8) win over Uzbek Skokhrukh Khudjabekov before having to withdraw from the tournament with a thumb injury.

2012: Frankie Gavin defeated champion Junior Witter via unanimous (119-109, 117-110, 117-112) to win the British welterweight title, which he later won outright, at the York Hall in London.
