2000: Coleman Barrett won heavyweight bronze at the World Junior Championships (now known as the World Youths) in Budapest. The Galway boxer, who later won an Irish professional heavyweight title, defeated Estonian Aleksej Zolotenko 15:6 in his quarter final before being defeated in the last four by Israel’s Roman Greenberg. Barrett was the only man of the eight-strong Irish team to win a bout in Hungary, with Martin Lindsey, Kenneth Egan, Jamie Dowling, Cormac O’Conaire, Gerard McAuley, Michael Mullaney, and Brian Ferry all losing their openers.

1913: Tipperary’s Dennis Haugh defended his BBBoC British light heavweight title for the first time with an eighth round stoppage win over Dubliner Dan Voyles in London. It was the first time the belt had ever been defended, as Haugh was the inaugural winner of the strap that Summer.
