1967: Young John McCormack defeated Welshman Eddie Avoth to win the vacant British light heavyweight title. The Dubliner, of Sean McDermott Street, won via a seventh round stoppage at the National Sporting Club in London. McCormack would later go on to be an integral part of St Saviour’s Boxing Club.

1909: Dublin’s Johnny Curran defeated Belfast’s Jim ‘Young’ McCullough over twenty rounds to defend his Irish bantamweight title at Celtic Park in Belfast. Curran had won the belt three weeks previously with a first round knockout of Jack McKeown.
