Cut doesn’t stop Conlan starting Commonwealth Games with classy win

2012 Olympic Bronze medalist Michael Conlan started of the 2014 Commonwealth Games boxing schedule in style with a comprehensive three round victory over Matthew Martin from Nauru.

Conlan’s class was apparent straight from the off with great work with the jab and some stinging overhand rights wobbling his durable opponent in the first.

Conlan continued where he left off in the second with superb fast hands and combinations leading to to Martin receiving two standing counts – the bout should perhaps of been stopped at this point.

Early in the third there was collective gasps around the stadium as a clash of heads saw blood spilling down the face of Conlan. However, luckily for the man from Team Northern Ireland the cut was on the head rather than the face and it shouldn’t disrupt his title hopes.
