Conor Wallace forced to drop out of Senior Championships

One of the main contenders for middleweight glory has been forced to withdraw from the National Senior Elite Championships which begin tomorrow.

Newry’s Conor Wallace has pulled out due to a persistent hand injury which has troubled him since December.

Runner-up at the last Seniors, Wallace had hoped to go one better this time round especially following a 2016 in which he joined the High Performance set-up and spent a camp in Las Vegas with MMA star Conor McGregor. However he will have to sit out the Championships due to injury.

The St Monica’s fighter announced this evening that “unfortunately I’ve had to withdraw from the National Elite Championships due to a hand injury. After a lot of physio and the best efforts from Orla O’Rourke, Sport NI, and Santry Sports Clinic, I will have to give the championships a miss.”

“Absolutely gutted after training so hard, but it’s another obstacle to overcome. I wish all my teammates and boxers the very best of luck and may the best man/woman win.”

Ten fighters remain at the weight. 2016 semi-finalist John Joyce and 2015 runner-up Stephen Broadhurst will both have their eyes on the prize, while veteran Roy Sheahan is being tipped by many in-the-know to be in with a shout.

Holy Trinity hot-shot Caoimhin Hynes makes the step up to 75kg along with fellow Belfast fighter Conor Doherty. Experienced duo Fearghus Quinn and Emmett Brennan will be in the mix, as will David Bicevas, Glory Lmuala, and Tommy Zold.
