John Joe Nevin [13(4)-0] claims he is considering an offer from Conor McGregor [0-1(1)] to become his trainer.

‘The Mullingar Shuffler’ has been sparring the UFC mixed martial artist this week and it appears the duo have had discussion with regard to ‘The Notorious’ becoming the former amateur standout’s coach.

Nevin claims the MMA fighter, who has recently turned down an offer to fight Ballyfermot middleweight Luke Keeler, has offered to become his trainer and admitted it’s an offer he is strongly considering.

The 30-year-old Westmeath fighter has a long overdue breakthrough fight coming up on November 16.

The Olympic silver medallist has had a stop-start five-and-a-half years as a pro boxer, suffering injuries, inactivity, but now gets the chance to gatecrash the world rankings on a big platform.

The gifted super feather will take on Nicaraguan southpaw Freddy Fonseca [27(18)-4(1)-1] for the vacant WBA International title at the York Hall in London in the chief support bout on a Hennessy Sports card, the fight will be shown live on Channel 5.

Once that fight is done and won, Nevin claims he will explore the option of having the now divisive McGregor as his coach.

The tweet could be tongue in cheek from Nevin or he could be seriously considering some form of link up with UFC’s first two weight world champion.

A link up would help Nevin’s profile and could propel a fighter, whose pro career has frustratingly stalled, toward bigger fights that big quicker.

The concern would be, that while McGregor has boxing previous he only reached intermediate level as an amateur at Crumlin. What he could teach Nevin would appear to be minimal, although he may have some mind set, mind games and S and C advice that could help.

One of Ireland’s greatest amateurs may feel he has enough boxing knowledge to get him through fights and as a result can get away with having the Dubliner in his corner. Or the whole thing could be just a publicity stunt.
