Conor Cooke wants to go to war with a Love Island contestant.
The Antrim fighter wants to fight Tommy Fury for the Irish title.
Tommy is a younger brother of former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, but now may be more noted for his appearance on IT’Vs Love Island.
The former MMA fighter turned boxer suggested the possibility of the clash with a simple post online and having seen the reaction it’s now one he is more than keen to make.
“To be honest I seen him hit the pads with Ricky Hatton on Instagram and I wrote on Facebook for a joke ‘Conor Cooke vs Tommy Fury’ then everyone went a little mad with the idea,” he explains to Irish-Boxing.com.
“But it’s a fight I think would be a great fight. Tommy is a decent boxer and 2-0 like myself. I would love it if it happen. We are both on similar paths, but we’d have to sort the weight issue.”
Cooke is rumoured to be appearing next on the Celtic Clash card and considering that show’s history, may have a domestic clash to look forward to.
However, he would prefer a high profile clash with Fury. In fact he would love a title fight with the boxing celeb.
“I hope he’d take it. There’s been over 40,000 views on one social media post alone. People are mailing him on Facebook, as far as I know, tweeting him and trying to push it.
“I really do think it would be a huge ticket seller. My phone hasn’t stopped in days. An Irish title on the line here in Ireland would be amazing. His brother Tyson fought for the title in Belfast. I’m sure something similar would interest Tommy,” he adds before saying he would come down a weight to make the fight happen.
“It started as a bit of craic. I assumed he was cruiserweight for some reason then learnt he was Lightheavy. He looks big at the minute though. Either he can come up or I would even attempt to go down. It’s a fight that I believe can happen if the right people are behind it and help push it. Weirder things have happened.”
Cooke’s pursuit of Fury is an obvious attempt to raise his profile, but he is aware Fury is an accomplished fighter and thus predicts a clash between the pair would be an entertaining affair.
“Obviously I’m saying I know I would beat him. What kind of fighter would I be if I never [said that]? But I genuinely do think it would be a great fight. I’ve watched him fight. Hes decent. It would be entertaining and would be a great crowd pleaser,” he continues before first admitting he watched the show and secondly confirming he was a fan of the boxer on it.
“I watched one or two episodes just. It’s not really my thing but was curious to see what all the fuss was about . What I seen I think he came across as a decent enough bloke.”
Of course, with both still in the novice stage of their pro careers and neither having had a scheduled eight rounder, an Irish title fight is not possible currently.
However, it could be something Fury, both of whom’s parents are Irish, may be looking to build towards – with older brother Tyson having won the heavyweight equivalent previously.
