Conlan registers convincing win over world number 3 to move one win away from a medal

MICHAEL Conlan cemented his status as Commonwealth gold favourite with another impressive win in Glasgow today (Monday).

The Belfast bantamweight progressed past round 16 with victory over his main rival for top podium sport, Shiva Thapa.

The Olympic bronze medal winner and World number 2 beat the World number 3  on unanimous decision to secure a quarter-final place.

The Belfast boxer becomes the fifth Team Northern Ireland competitor to reach the last eight and is just one win from clinching a medal.

Conlan worked from range in the opening the stanza and his skill set won him the round ahead of Thapa’s industry.

Thapa displayed even more aggression in the second, but again Conlan had too much class for the Indian and took the round.

Thapa was then docked a point for leading with the head in the third and when Canadian referee Tony Germain penalised the Indian fighter the fight was effectively ended as a contest.

Conlan now faces Uganda’s Bashir Nasir on Wednesday afternoon.
