Conlan: If its not gold its going in the bin

IF It’s not gold its going in the bin stated Michael Conlan after he opened the Commonwealth Games boxing competition with an impressive win in Glasgow today.

Conlan proved why he is favourite to win the 56kg division and indeed being tipped to be an Irish boxing success story for years to come with a skilled and convincing win over Martin Martin of Nauru in his opening bantamweight bout.

The Olympic bronze medallist shrugged off a head cut to claim a unanimous decision win and has set his sights on gold.

Indeed anything but gold won’t make the Belfast fighters mantelpiece.

“Gold at the Commonwealth Games would rank up there with the Olympics because it would mean winning a competition instead of finishing third,” Conlan said.

“Gold is the only one I want – I don’t want silver and I don’t want bronze and I will throw them away if I do get them.

“On my day if I come in in the right frame of mind nobody is going to beat me. Everybody has their off days, but I’m not going to have an off day at these Commonwealth Games.”
