CONFIRMED: Carl Frampton has left Cyclone Promotions

Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] has released a statement today confirming that he has parted company with Barry McGuigan and Cyclone Promotions.

Rumour has been rife in recent weeks that ‘The Jackal’ was set to leave the outfit following the cancellation of his homecoming fight with Andres Gutierrez.

The Belfast featherweight was revealed to have resigned from his directorship with the company just one week before the proposed fight at the SSE Odyssey Arena – which was cancelled the due to a freak injury suffered by the Mexican opponent.

Many believed the departure to be inevitable, and the impending split was reported on last week by the BBC before being confirmed by the Tigers Bay man himself in the last hour.

Frampton thanked Cyclone for their time together and said that it is time to “take my career into my own hands.”

The statement in full read:

I can confirm that I have parted company with Barry McGuigan and Cyclone Promotions. I would like to thank Barry, the Mc Guigan family and Cyclone promotions for our time together.

Having taken time to consider my future and discussed it with those closest to me, I am confident that now is the right time to move forward and take my career into my own hands.

I still believe that I’m the best featherweight in the world and I promise my fans that I am continuing with my efforts to get my homecoming fight rescheduled in the very near future.

During his time with Cyclone, Frampton won BBBoC Celtic, Commonwealth and European titles before winning and twice defending the IBF super bantamweight title. Last year he would unify the WBA belt in a grudge match with England’s Scott Quigg before a move up in weight to claim the WBA featherweight title off three-weight champ Leo Santa Cruz.

The exploits made Frampton the consensus 2016 Fighter of the Year.

The start of 2017 saw the Ulsterman lose his title in an immediate rematch with Santa Cruz in Las Vegas, who then refused to a rubber match in Belfast, and he has not fought since.

It is not yet confirmed who Frampton will now turn to for promotional and managerial duties, or whether he will continue to be trained by Shane McGuigan, son of Barry.
