Commonwealth title path becomes clearer for Feargal McCrory

Feargal McCrory [11(4)-0] will look to put himself at the top of the queue for the Commonwealth title in Belfast this Saturday night.

The Coalisland super featherweight headlines the MHD ‘Summer Brawl’ bill at the Europa Hotel and he and his team are aiming for the rainbow belt in the near future.

Next month they will know who specifically they are targeting following the confirmation of a vacant title fight that pits English contenders Zelfa Barrett [21(13)-1(0)] and Lyon Woodstock [12(5)-1(0)] against each other.

The clash will play out on the Josh Warrington v Kid Galahad undercard in Leeds on June 15th and McCrory, should he come through his fight on Saturday, will be a very interested spectator.

‘Fearless Feargal’ will face game Nicaraguan Yesner Talvera [15(4)-6(1)-1] over six at the weekend before turning his attention to Leeds.

Barrett is a big favourite on paper versus Woodstock – as he was against another MHD fighter in Ronnie Clark last year when the Scot pulled off a stunning upset.

This will be Barrett’s first big fight since the loss and the same can be said for Woodstock, who was once mooted as an opponent for Jono Carroll, following his defeat to Archie Sharp.

Promoter Frank Warren said that “this is the sort of fight the fans want to see and we are delivering them.”

“Zelfa and Lyon are both top super featherweights who have been tipped for the top. They have both suffered a setback, but that is always irrelevant in the grand scheme of things and they will be stronger for the experience.

“We’ve got the best group of super featherweights on our books and our intention is for them all to fight each other with meaningful titles at stake that will push the winners towards world title contention.”

“We have already had Lyon against Archie Sharp in an excellent fight and now he will take on Zelfa in a fight that will catch the imagination of the fans. We’ve also got the British champion Sam Bowen who will consider himself top of the pecking order right now.”

Bowen, of course, looks set to face another Irish fighter in Anto Cacace in London on July 13th.

McCrory had been in the frame to face Bowen in the Ibstock champion’s previous defence but was tied in to face Karl Kelly for the Irish lightweight title, a brawl which he won via ninth-round stoppage.
