Late addition Colm Murphy scores impressive win at Commonwealth Youth Games

Belfast bantam Colm Murphy got Northern Ireland up and running at the Commonwealth Youth Games tonight.

His St George’s teammate, James McGivern, won bantam gold at the previous edition of the tournament, and Murphy set himself down the same path with an assured performance in the Bahamas.

Early in the day team captain Dominic Bradley had been defeated in the lightweight last 16, but Murphy ensure there was a positive end to the day following an impressive win over Scotland’s Ahmed Faraz.

The Ulster teen, a late addition to the team following the withdrawal of light welter Aaron McKenna, won on a unanimous decision to book himself in Friday’s quarter finals where he will box Canadian Sean Finnigan for a bronze medal.

Tomorrow (Thursday July 20th) sees one Irish boxer in action, with Holy Trinity middleweight Kane Tucker boxing for bronze against another Scot, Reekie Ryan.
