Casey: Lee’s success is an inspiration hopefully I can jump on the back of it

THINGS are so bad claims former European Champion Willie Casey that up and coming fighters don’t even want to try and take advantage of his recent inactivity.

Casey is ready and willing, but unable to secure a fight at present. The former Prizefighter winner has fought just three times in two years, but isn’t ready to call it a day.

‘Big Bang’ believes his fellow Limerick man Andy Lee’s recent World title win could give prove CPR for the super bantamweight’s career and inspire a Casey revival.

Lee has expressed a desire to defend his title in Limerick and fellow local favourite Casey, whose last three bouts have been on Cyclone Promotions cards, would be an obvious contender for the undercard.

“It has been quiet for me at the minute. Hopefully I will get back into full time training and something will happen in the New Year. With the likes of Andy Lee winning a World title hopefully that will help me get some fights,” Casey told Irish-boxing.com.

“It is great for Limerick, Ireland and Irish boxing. We have two Irish world champions now in Carl Frampton and Andy Lee. Hopefully that will giving boxing a boost and TV will become more interested. Lets keep the fighters here, so they don’t have to fight abroad,” he added.

As a former Continental ring king, who has been inactive Casey has been surprised that he isn’t deemed as a possible scalp for up and coming super bantamweights and the former World title challenger remains eager for one more shot at the big time.

“I want to fight at super bantamweight that is my weight and it is the one I want to compete at. I just need that opportunity, that one chance to get my name back out there.

“I am surprised no one is trying to take advantage of the fact I am a former European champion that is inactive. I am not getting asked to fight, that is how bad things have gone, but hopefully Andy’s win will give it a boost. Hopefully a lot of us can jump on the back of his success.”

“His win is a huge inspiration for Limerick and me personally, I am determined to keep going.”
