Carl Frampton to fight Mexican opponent in Philly

Carl Frampton [26(15)-2(0)] will look to acclimatize himself further to the Mexican style when he returns to the ring on August 10th.

The Belfast feather boxes the first time since his failed IBF world title attempt against Josh Warrington last December in Philadelphia on the top of a Top Rank bill.

The former two weight world champion has been promised victory will set up a blockbuster world title fight with promotional stablemate and WBO world champion Oscar Valdez – and with that in mind his team are looking at Mexican options for the ‘The Jackal’.

In fact Frampton told confirmed on his weekly TKO podcast that one Mexican in particular is in the frame. The proposed opponent’s style doesn’t twin identically to the reigning world champ whom the 32 year old hopes to face before the year is out, but is similar enough.

“We are looking at a Mexican opponent. There were a few mentioned. I can’t say names yet until it gets over the line, but the guy it looks like it’s going to be isn’t really that similar to Valdez, but similar enough,” Frampton explained.

While it’s clear Team Frampton hope to achieve some form of Valdez preparation when the Belfast fighter makes his ring return one of Ireland’s greatest is focused on the job at hand.

Frampton suggests victory live on ESPN+ come August 10th won’t be enough. The Jamie Moore-trained fighter is adamant he has to register a performance of note.

“It’s about the win, it’s about looking explosive and getting the win, a good win and then thinking about Valdez after that. I have been pretty much promised and it’s nail in, that if I win this fight I’ll be fighting Oscar Valdez for the World title before the end of the year. But I need to win well, so I need to get passed the opponent that I can’t mention yet.”

Frampton has Mexican previous. His first taste came back in 2012 when he out pointed Raul Hirales. Former WBA super flyweight world champion Hugo Fidel Cazares was stopped at the Odyssey two years later, while the late Alejandro Gonzalez Jr gave ‘The Jackal’ a scare on his American debut. Mega fights with Leo Santa Cruz played out back to back before Horacio Garcia came to Belfast for Frampton’s first fight with his new team.
