Carl Frampton comeback date confirmed

Carl Frampton will return to the ring in America on August 10th.

‘The Jackal’ announced his retirement in the immediate disappointment of losing to Josh Warrington last December, but with time to reflect revealed he would fight on in a bid to become a world champion again.

A deal was signed with Top Rank and an August comeback was always on the cards, but it was unsure until now as to the exact date and the details of the return.

Dan Rafael of ESPN has confirmed that the Belfast fighter will fight for the 29th time on Saturday August 10th.

An opponent has yet to be confirmed for the bout, but Frampton will top a Top Rank bill which will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

According to Rafael the former two weight world champion will fight in either Madison Square Garden in New York or Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

The August 10th date had been confirmed by Bob Arum last month as the preferred date but the Top Rank boss had mentioned Boston as the likely location.

Victory in the August 10th bout should set up a WBO world title fight for the Jamie Moore trained fighter.

The 32 year old is expected to challenge for the strap in December, but questions remain with regard to whether or not champion Oscar Valdez can make the weight for a seventh defense.

The Mexican certainly believes he can and has been calling for a fight with Frampton this week.

“He asked me to fight with Carl Frampton, he wants that fight,” Valdez’s manager Frank Espinoza said. “And the other option could be Josh Warrington, a unifying one, but the priority is Frampton.

”Obviously we try to do the best for Valdez, we want him to listen to his body and where he feels better then we will look for the best opportunities, but he has told us about Frampton, it is a fight that we know that the Irishman wants and of course Oscar wants, hopefully we can achieve something.”
