Cacace Ready to Make his Fortune by Making his Own Luck

The famously misfortunate Anthony Cacace [19(7)-1(0)] is ready to start making his own luck from Saturday night on.

The Belfast fighter takes on Italian Michael Magnesi [21(13)-0] for the IBO super-featherweight belt at the AO Arena in Manchester.

The fight comes around not long after ‘The Apache’ seriously considered retirement. Hurting from continual cancellation disappointments, the latest of which was a fight week fall through of a world title eliminator scheduled to be chief support on Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte’s Wembley world title fight, Cacace was seriously considering hanging them up.

However, a fight with IBO world champion Magnesi fell into his lap, and the self-proclaimed ‘unluckiest man’ in Irish boxing now believes he has been given the slight bit of luck needed to allow him to finally fulfill his potential.

All the 33-year-old wanted was that chance. The lucky break is enough, as he is confident he won’t need fortune to overcome the challenge of ‘Lone Wolf’ on the Joyce-Parker undercard.

“I’ve been crazy unlucky. I’ve probably been the unluckiest Irish boxer in a long long time but I’ve got this opportunity now and I have to take it,” he tells Boxing Ticket’s NI.

“I think of it as everything coming together for me and things aligning. I feel like everything that’s happened was meant to happen and the opportunity now is unbelievable. I really want to take it and hopefully do the business.”

Doing the business and getting the job done are essential for the British champion, who fights the Italian live on BT Sports this weekend. ‘The Apache’ suggests a defeat would signal the end of a career that has yet to fulfill its potential.

“If it’s going to happen it has to happen now. Michael is ranked well with all the governing bodies, so if I do a job on him then I’m in line for some huge fights and some fights that can change my life.

“I’m not even thinking about legacy. I’m thinking about how I can win these big fights and make money. I don’t really want to leave the sport with nothing. This is my biggest payday, it’s not much but it’s a good payday. I’d like to win this and get the biggest fight I can and make as much money as I can.”

Many within Irish boxing circles argue Cacace is a big favourite against the Lou Di Bella managed fighter. However, team Magnesi are extremely confident and the Frank Warren promoted fighter argues the Italian should have the shorter odds beside his name.

“I am the underdog,” he adds. “He has 21 fights, 21 wins, he’s on a nine straight knockout streak. I haven’t fought in over a year, I’m turning 34 he’s only 27, so I am the underdog whatever way you look at it.”
