BUI pave the way for Byrne v McDonagh Irish title fight

The Boxing Union of Ireland have paved the way for a Dean Byrne versus Peter McDonagh welterweight Irish title fight.

The pair have been trading verbals for some months now, albeit in a light hearted manner, and look set to clash live on Boxnation on the National Stadium hosted November 7 MGM Show.

If the fight is agree-rumour suggests it already has been-the pair will trade leather for the right to be crowned Irish Champion on the eagerly anticipated Dublin show.

For ‘Connemara Kid’ McDonagh it will be an opportunity to become three weight Irish Champion, while former Wild Card puncher Byrne will challenge for a domestic strap for the first time in his career.

According to rumour MGM plan to have other Irish title fights on the card a move that would be welcomed by Irish fight fans.

Having regular Irish title fights and active Irish champions would be a massive boost to the game domestically, would lead to some mouthwatering derbies and could add further prestige and value to the green belt.
