British title hopeful Conroy warns Ward about getting in his way

Liam Conroy [17(9)-4(2)-1] is ready to push Steven Ward [11(4)-0] out of the way so he can secure a second shot at the British light heavyweight crown.

The Barrow fighter of Galway descent lost to the impressive Joshua Buatsi in a March British title fight, but is determined to secure another shot at the Lonsdale belt.

The first obstacle between him and another domestic tilt is Belfast’s Ward and the 26-year-old warns he is ready to move his former sparring partner out of the way when they meet at the Ulster Hall on June 21st.

One of a number of anticipated bouts on the #MTKFightNight card, Ward versus Conroy is for the WBO European ranking title, but Conroy doesn’t want to jump past British level and is domestic honours keen.

“I still want to build myself back up to the British title mandatory position. It’s still my dream and I won’t stop until I get it,” Conroy said before warning Ward.

“Hopefully I get this fight won looking good and start building towards that. Whoever’s in the way, that’s who I’m going for.”

The bout plays out on ESPN+ and gives both fighters the chance to get some exposure Stateside. However, it wouldn’t be seen by as many or wouldn’t be as high profile as the Buatsi clash and it that regard the English fighter doesn’t believe he will feel nervous.

“I’m looking forward to boxing on the ESPN+ platform. It’s a great opportunity to showcase my skills to a wider audience in the US.

“I don’t think I’ll be any more nervous than normal on the night, though – it’s just exciting and what an opportunity Steve and I have been given.”

Joining Conroy and Ward on a stellar bill are light welterweight rivals Tyrone McKenna and Darragh Foley, who fight it out for the WBC International title, while local favourite Paddy Gallagher meets the undefeated Liam Wells at welterweight.

The likes of Lewis Crocker, Taylor McGoldrick, Caoimhin Agyarko, and Owen O’Neill make up the undercard.
