Betting: Odds for the Irish in action at Day 1 of the World Championships

Three Irishmen are in action today at the opening day of boxing at the World Amateur Championships.

Middleweight Michael O’Reilly, light flyweight Brendan Irvine, and light welterweight Dean Walsh all trade leather today the 7,700 seater Ali Bin Hamas Al Attiya Arena-Al Sadd.

For those of you who like to bet a couple of quid, Irish bookmaking giant Paddy Power are offering odds on both outrights for the tournaments as well as for individual bouts.

See our run-through of the outright odds for the Irish HERE.

In terms of individual bouts:
Michael O’Reilly seems to be a great bet at 4/5 to overcome his unheralded Ukrainian opponent, Valerii Kharlamov (10/11). While of course a tough fight, as any with a Ukrainian is, O’Reilly is a stronger favourite than the odds imply.

On the other hand, Brendan Irvine and Dean Walsh both face tough challenges yet have been assigned prohibitive favourites tags of 1/4. While both Irishmen are rightly the favourites, both bouts are closer than the odds suggest.

Walsh faces a tricky, multiple-medal winning Venezuelan Luis Diaz (5/2), while Irvine faces America’s Nico Hernandez (also 5/2).

Irvine, O’Reilly, and Walsh will all be in the ring today in the evening session (5pm Irish time).
