Benefits of Using Punching Mitts as Part of Your Training

There are many different boxing drills, workouts, and tools. You just can’t do the same drills every day over and over again and expect to progress.

You have to mix things up and add different tools to your arsenal so you can become a better fighter. The heavy bag improves your power, the speed bag improves your speed. There is a tool for everything.

Today, we are going to talk about the benefits of training with one of the most essential boxing equipment – the punching mitts.

Focus and Technique

Punching mitts are often called “focus” mitts because of their great effect on a fighter’s focus.

A lot of beginners are not comfortable with throwing combinations or just can’t hit the target precise enough. The easiest way to fix that is training on the mitts with a good coach.

It can improve your aim drastically in a short period of time.

Technique is one of the few basic things that you just have to make right. Luckily, putting on your boxing gloves and training on punching mitts can help you polish your technique.

Also, it will be very beneficial to your “flow” of fighting. You will notice that your combinations will become smoother and faster.

Helps You Get in Shape

Working out with punching mitts is a great way to burn some calories and fat too. It is an extremely good exercise for people that only want to lose some weight and get in shape.

However, it has the same benefits for fighters which are already in shape.

The thing is if you want to condition yourself in fighting you got to fight. However, you can’t spar every day of the week for a long period of time.

It won’t be healthy for your brain and also it will get you injured after some time.

So what can you do? Hitting the punching bag? Sure, it is a great exercise but usually, a punching bag has a lot of resistance which can still lead to injuries if you are training every day hard on the bag.

So the focus mitts come in play and they are a great addition to your overall training.

They are a lot smaller than a heavy bag and also they provide little resistance which gives your ligaments some active rest.

Improves Your Understanding of Distance

The distance between you and your opponent is your first level of defense. He can’t hit you if he is not close enough.

That is why some fighters hold their hands down and still have a great defense. The reason for this is that they have a great understanding of distance.

Training with punching mitts is great for understanding where you have to be so you can hit but cannot get hit.

Conclusion

If you want to develop your focus, technique, and conditioning then you should definitely add focus mitts training in your workouts.

Of course, you should spar and train on the heavy bag as well. But training with punching mitts is a great and safe way to improve your capabilities as a fighter.
