‘Back this woman all the way’ – Conor McGregor calls for Katie Taylor support

Conor McGregor has rowed in behind Katie Taylor ahead of her attempts to become the first Irish fighter of the four belt era to become undisputed world champion.

The pair have been mentioned beside each other in the great ‘lack of Katie Taylor media coverage’ debate this week with some essentially screaming ‘The Notorious’ gets twice the exposure for half the achievements.

Now the MMA fighter has done his bit to spread the Taylor gospel taking to social media to ask millions of followers to get behind ‘Ireland’s Katie Taylor’.

Although most won’t want to admit it, the move by Ireland’s most recognizable sports star could help promote possibly Ireland’s greatest ever athlete and her fight in a manner an abundance of press coverage at home couldn’t – especially considering that many of those complaining about a lack of coverage are those who do not consume traditional media where Taylor has enjoyed huge reportage.

Speaking on social media McGregor said:

“This is one of my favorite pictures! ‬â€ȘWhat an experience it was to watch this woman fight live! ‬If I was not in a cast from my own fight preparations, I would be ringside for this fight 100%! ‬Back this woman all the way! ‬â€ȘAiming to become the Unified World Boxing Champion this weekend! The first boxer male or female from the Emerald Isle to ever reach this coveted position! Ireland’s Katie Taylor! What a woman.”

‘The Notorious’ was in Boston to support the Irish talent on the Matchroom USA card in October of last year and was a keen observer as Taylor dominated Cidny Serrano at the TD Garden on DAZN and Sky Sports.

The two-weight UFC champion is a former Crumlin amateur and has previously turned up at shows to support the likes of Jamie Kavanagh and Dean Byrne, while the MMA star also walked Michael Conlan into the ring ahead of his debut.

The former Floyd Mayweather opponent watched James Tennyson’s brave performance versus Tevin Farmer before becoming a vocal supporter as Taylor whitewashed Puerto Rican Serrano.

“You’re a f**king animal!”  McGregor is seen saying on an Instagram video he released.

“You’re nice as pie but you’re ruthless in there, it’s an honour to see you live.

“Just keep doing your thing and I’ll have your back, I’ll always back you, whatever you need. It’s an honour for me to see you live, you’re an Irish hero.”

“I’ve a lot of respect for you inside the ring but outside of it too.”
