Back for good – Stevie Quinn Jr ready to get busy

Stevie Quinn Jr [9(2)-2(0)] assured he is back for good after he successfully ended a two-year fight sabbatical on Saturday night.

The Birthday Boy celebrated turning 25 with victory over the game Edwin Tellez in what was the first Irish-based pro fight of 2018.

The bout was also the Down fighters first pro bout since December 2015 and not long after the crowd serenaded him with a chorus of Happy Birthday as he left the ring, Quinn was adamant fight fans will see him more than once before his next birthday.

The fighter, who made his debut against Delroy Spencer – the puncher his father retired after losing too – back in 2011 was keen to point out his comeback isn’t fleeting.

“That is only the start, that was about getting back in there and you won’t have to wait to two years to see me again. That is me back from good,” Quinn told Irish-boxing.com.

“I go away on holiday in April, Mark mentioned March so hopefully I will be out around then.”

The rangy southpaw looked more than comfortable upon his return. He looked more oiled than rusty and didn’t seem to have any problems doing six rounds.

Most observed the ‘Mighty Quinn’ looked sharp and were complimentary of an obvious skill set.

The fighter himself was happy with the performance but warned he didn’t consult anywhere near top form during the impressive shutout win.

“I thought I did ok, but there is a lot more to come. Believe me, there is a lot more to come. That was my first fight in a while so it was just about getting a feel for it again. It was all nerves this morning leading up to it, but it’s good to be back.”

“I actually thought my timing was a wee bit off in the first round, but I gradually got into it again and got a feel for it. I think it was alright considering I was out for two years. I enjoyed it.”

Not only did the Newtownards man look sharp on his return he also managed six relatively fast-paced rounds and believes they will stand to him.

“I did the six rounds okay, but it wasn’t at a massively high pace. He was active and he came to win and that is what I wanted. I didn’t want a mug and I really enjoyed the fight.”

“Mark just said it was a six rounder and I was happy with that. I am 9-2 now so it wouldn’t make sense to go back to four rounds.”
